Who is your community?
I grew up in Enemy Swim District on the SWO Tribe in South Dakota. I’ve lived in Watertown for over 10 years and work for the SWO Tribe as an in-patient treatment counselor. Therefore, I feel a part of the Watertown community as well as a community member of the SWO Tribe.
Give us a behind-the-scenes look at your average day.
I wake up at 6am and leave the house by 7am to travel an hour north for work that starts at 8am. I’m a licensed addiction counselor at an in-patient treatment center. I really enjoy my career calling. I leave work at 4:30pm to travel home to attend my 2 sons school functions. Make dinner and prepare for the next day.
What challenge in your life or work are you most interested in overcoming?
I’m very interested in grant writing. I have no experience at this time. However, hopefully in the near future be able to take on that task.
If you could do any job, what would you do and why?
I enjoy outreach and prevention services. I would love to be a part of educating the community the dangers of addiction.
What is the most beneficial aspect of living in the OTA region when it comes to your career?
I have seen OTA members become strong leaders in their community.
At what intersection do you live your life?
I live at the intersection of happy and motivated.
Where do you think good ideas come from?
Asking questions, passion and thinking outside the box.
What’s one current trend you think will change the world?
Growing need for spirituality.
What’s the best way to put inspiration into action?
Prayer and having faith in what you set out to do.
What’s the greatest risk you’ve taken?
Getting my GED at age 30 and applying to college, which led to graduate school.
What’s your biggest failure, and what did you learn from it?
My marriage of 11 years that ended last year. I’m still learning from it.
Who do you hope to leave a legacy for?
My Two Sons.
Who is the most connected person in your life, and what personal characteristics make him or her so well-connected?
I’m most connected with my best friend because she is a great woman who helped me through my most difficult and trying times.
Who is the most creative person in your life, and why?
The most creative person in my life is my Mother Crystal Owen. She is an elected tribal executive that has created positive change for the Oyate.
Who is the most community-focused person in your life, and how do they impact their communities?
Crystal Owen. She is great at community outreach and also a former member of OTA.
What passion project are you working on right now?
I would love to focus on community outreach. I hope to achieve career advancement in becoming a director of community outreach program.
I understand my talent for working with and helping people meet their goals. I love learning and not afraid to step out of my comfort zone.
